Protecting Students Spines This Fall: Why Proper Backpack Fit Matters
As students head back to school, backpacks fill up fast with textbooks, laptops, water bottles, and sports gear. A properly fitted backpack isn't just about comfort, it's about preventing unnecessary stress on a growing spine.
Why Backpack Fit Matters
Students today carry heavier loads than ever, and growing bodies are especially vulnerable to strain from excess weight or uneven pressure. When a backpack doesn't fit correctly, it changes posture, and those small daily compensations can add up to real pain over time.
The Essentials of a Proper Backpack Fit
Choose the right size, with the pack sitting between the shoulders and the top of the hips
Always use both straps to keep pressure even on both shoulders
Adjust the straps so the pack sits snug against the body, not hanging low
Use the chest or waist strap if the backpack has one, to help distribute weight
Keep total weight to no more than 10 to 15 percent of the student's body weight
Pack heavier items closest to the back panel
Warning Signs of a Poor Fit
Complaints of neck, shoulder, or lower back discomfort
Visible strap marks or grooves in the shoulders
Leaning forward to compensate for the weight
Constantly adjusting or repositioning the pack
A backpack that hangs below the hips
Simple Daily Habits That Prevent Pain
Do a weekly backpack cleanout to remove anything that isn't needed
Teach proper lifting mechanics, using the legs rather than twisting the back
Reinforce the habit of wearing both straps every time
Check and readjust the straps monthly, especially for growing kids
If your student is already dealing with back, neck, or shoulder pain, it doesn't have to become the new normal. Our team at LVL Up Physical Therapy can help identify what's causing the discomfort and build a plan to get them back to feeling their best.
